Cornerstone Housing Inc. was founded in 2015 as a 501c3 non-profit organization to address housing affordability in Florida. Cornerstone Housing handles every aspect of the affordable housing process, from project financing and housing development to community outreach and long-term resident services.
Housing Crisis in Central Florida
There’s a huge housing shortage for service workers, such as retail salespersons, nursing assistants and food prep workers, who affluent residents rely upon.
Service jobs make up the fastest growing employment sector in Central Florida and they pay low salaries. The market is not satisfying their need for housing and their choices are scarce if not impossible.
It is critical for people to have the option to live near where they work, particularly those workers who are most essential to the local economy. Vital employees include teachers, emergency service workers, nurses and retail clerks, many of whom find that most existing and newly constructed housing is simply priced beyond their reach causing them to travel a great distance to get to work.
Workforce Housing!
Cornerstone 4 1000
Workforce housing does not mean low-income housing, subsidized public housing, Section 8 housing group homes, or unattractive or rundown homes at the edge of town. The idea behind workforce housing is that vital members of the local workforce—such as teachers, health care workers, police officers, firefighters, childcare workers, municipal employees, and retail salespeople—may not be able to afford to live near their place of employment. Our workforce deserves the opportunity to live near the places they make a difference every day. Simply put, workforce housing is homes for working households.
WHAT DOES WORKFORCE HOUSING DO?
- It improves a family’s physical and mental health, and helps children excel in school.
- For the elderly and people with disabilities, affordable housing is one third the cost of institutional housing.
- Affordable housing construction and rehabilitation stimulates local economies by creating jobs and generating business for contractors and suppliers.
